This weekend’s Legends of Speedway night at the Perth Motorplex will honor long-time Street Stock journeyman Bob Wakefield during the third round of the Novus Glass Street Stock Month of Madness.

Kalgoorlie’s Wakefield was a latecomer to the high-adrenaline sport, getting behind the wheel at age 42 after being approached in Esperance while working in the pit.

Commencing his competitive racing career in 1992 aboard a Valiant Charger, an odd addition to the regular Street Stock fields of Ford Cortinas and Chrysler Sigmas, Wakefield later built another Charger in 1995, a car he made infamous.

Contesting his maiden National Title at Esperance Speedway in 1995, the dedicated racer participated in a total of 19 National Titles and 27 state titles.

His best result on a National level came with third place in 2011 at Timmis Speedway in Mildura, Victoria.

Even away from the wheel, Wakefield has been the former president, treasurer, committee member of the Boulder Speedway Association, and a life member of the club.

Wakefield has undoubtedly given a great deal to the sport, and even though his career as a driver has now come to an end, his generous nature and staunch involvement in speedway is the reason he will be honored this weekend.
