It is with a very heavy heart that we advise of the passing of one of the greatest Speedway drivers in Western Australian Speedway history, with Bert Vosbergen losing his battle with Cancer on Monday evening.
Bert was a colourful character, there was no doubt about that and he enriched the Speedway scene over four decades. He was controversial, a pioneer, and one of the great showmen in Speedway. He had the nick-name Big Bad Bert, but off track his persona was quite the opposite. He was also a champion swimmer and something he was also very passionate about right up until he became ill.
The winner of seven State Titles, in Western Australia and South Australia, Vosbergen won his last State Title in 2004. Bert told me this was his most satisfying victory, as he beat a stellar field, driving a car with a bunky old motor in it.
Bert raced all around Australia, in many National Titles, and won a multitude of Feature events around the Country. Vosbergen won 36 Feature races at the Claremont Speedway between 1973 and 1999, which included winning at least one Feature Race every season between 1981 and 1992. Vosbergen won the third most Feature events at the venue, only surpassed by the legendary Ben Ludlow with 50 career wins and Laurie Hardie with 42.
Vosbergen was most recently honoured at the WA Super Sedan Title in Narrogin where he was the Grand Marshall and led the field around the track on the Grand Parade, something he was honoured to do.
Deepest sympathy to his dear wife Jude and the entire Vosbergen family, Speedway has lost one of the greats. RIP #4
