This March long weekend will see the Coalfields come alive as the Odh Mechanical SSA Street Stock WA Title heads here the Collie Speedway for what promises to be a spectacular 39th running of the Championship.
A huge field of sixty-seven drivers, travelling from Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the south, will converge to Collie for the State’s premier Street Stock event. The Collie Racing Drivers Association will host the SSA Street Stock WA Title for a record fifth time, having previously staged the event in 1994, 1996, 2010 and 2019, further cementing the venue’s rich history within Speedway Sedans WA.
Major sponsorship for this year’s event comes from ODH Mechanical, with Stevie and Fiona O’Dowd throwing their support behind the Title. Their backing ensures the continued growth and success of the Street Stock division and provides a fitting platform for one of the biggest weekends on the calendar.
Derby’s Jake Hoath will enter the weekend carrying the coveted WA1 roof number as the defending and two-time State Champion. However, retaining that number will be no easy task. The field boasts seven of the last eight SSA Street Stock WA Champions, making this one of the most credentialed line-ups in recent memory.
Five-time champion Jamie Oldfield (2005, 2014, 2020, 2021, 2024) headlines the list of former winners and will be keen to add yet another title to his already impressive résumé. He is joined by Damon Lyall (2022) and Hayden Norman (2018), along with experienced campaigners Wayne Thomson (2002, 2004) and Brian Jackson (1998), ensuring Hoath will have no shortage of challengers.
For Thomson, the event holds extra significance as he continues a remarkable streak, having competed in all four previous SSA Street Stock WA Titles held at Collie, including a fifth-place finish at the inaugural Collie Title in 1994.
Adding further intrigue are a host of drivers who have stood on the podium in this event but are still chasing that elusive State Title victory. Donny Davis, Kayne Dellar, Ben Norman, Paul Joss, Ethan Genev, Jace Kempton, Peter Herbert, Paul Briggs, Daniel Ameduri and Michael Hamon have all previously finished in the top three and will be determined to go two steps better this time around.
The depth of the field does not stop there. Fresh from representing Western Australia at the SSA National Street Stock Title in Murray Bridge, two-time National Champion Michael Hamon, Lenny Bates, Craig Clayton, Matt Hammond, Cody Avins and Peter Dowie return to local competition brimming with confidence and experience.
Hamon also claimed the most recent Street Stock feature victory at Collie, while others have enjoyed success at the venue this season. Cody Avins has banked three feature wins at the track, with Craig Clayton and Hayden Norman (two wins) also proving they know how to get the job done at the Coalfields circuit.
Adding to the significance of the weekend, the Collie Racing Drivers Association is proud to announce that Jeff Genev will serve as Grand Marshall of the ODH Mechanical SSA Street Stock WA Title.
Genev remains the only driver from Collie to have won the SSA Street Stock WA Title, claiming victory in 2006 at Narrogin Speedway.
In a dramatic 35-lap encounter that featured eight stoppages, Genev withstood persistent pressure from Drew Edwards to secure the win ahead of Edwards, Wayne Thomson and Paul Colmer.
All roads lead to the Coalfields this March long weekend. With history, pride and the WA1 number on the line, the 39th running of the SSA Street Stock WA Title is set to be one to remember.
Practice will be conducted on Friday, February 27, before three rounds of heat racing on Saturday, February 28.
One final round of heats and the all-important State Final will bring the curtain down on Sunday, March 1, when a new champion will be crowned – or Hoath will once again stand tall as WA1.
