Round Two of the ODH Mechanical Tri-City Series at Geraldton City Speedway was nothing short of a domination for Jamie Oldfield, who will start on pole and lead every lap as he would win easily over Ben Norman and Peter Dowie.
Oldfield was in control for the whole 30-lap distance, but what happened behind him was the talk of the night.
We had not even passed the parade lap before losing Damon Lyall, who failed to reach the green light—ending what had been a night nothing short of a nightmare for a driver who cut his teeth at this venue in a Junior Sedan.
Once we did get going, tyres were on everyone’s minds as it was only after the opening lap we lost State Champion Jake Hoath and Jace Kempton to flats. After that, Hayden Norman, Donny Davis, Blake Iwanow and Brinley McGaffin, all suffered the same fate.
The most significant accident was Jim McGorman, who rolled along the back straight after contact with Daniel Flavel.
Oldfield, after every restart, just continued to grow his gap over the field, but the battle between Norman and Dowie was a joy to watch, with the hometown Dowie doing his best to keep in touch with the current Australia 2.
With all this commotion, Cody Avins somehow found his way to the lead battle, working his way to fourth with Ryan Penfold, who was on a very quiet achiever all night on to fifth—where they both finished.
But there was no stopping Oldfield, who not only took the win tonight but also takes control of the Tri-City Series and is in the box seat to take home a $4,500 winners prize at series end.
The third and final round of the Tri-City Series will be at the Perth Mototplex on January 12 and 13.
