Victorian Mick Nicola Jr has followed in his famous father’s footsteps to become a State Champion in Super Sedans after victory at Waikerie’s Sunline Speedway in South Australia last night.
The two Nicola’s occupied the front row for the main event with the duo racing wheel to wheel at the front of the field in the opening laps.
Former South Australian champion Ryan Alexander in the Lewiston Haulage S47 Dominator and Kym Jury in the Jury’s Liquid Waste S93 Dominator both joined in the battle for the lead, as the four swapped positions on multiple occasions.
Nicola Jr made a brilliant outside pass to hit the lead just prior to the first stoppage for the spun Sarah Pope on lap fifteen.
Nicola Sr was soon passed by Jury and then Alexander with Steve Schwarz bringing on the yellow lights on once more on lap nineteen and would go no further in race.
Disaster struck Alexander with eight laps to run as he headed infield with a suspension issue on the right front of the Dominator ending his race while in third place.
Mick Nicola Jr powered away from the field in the remaining laps to claim victory by over six seconds from Kym Jury and Mick Nicola Sr who recorded his eleventh podium result in the SA State Title.
Locals Kym Leyson, Neville Nitschke and Sarah Pope rounded out the finishers before a fantastic Saturday Night crowd.
