Victorian Matt Nelson has claimed victory in the SSA Street Stock Queensland State Title for the third time straight after his win at the Gympie Speedway last night.
Nelson who started from pole position had a great initial battle for the lead with Shane Roycroft in the V82 Ford Falcon.
Thirty Three SSA Street Stocks rolled into the Gympie Speedway pit area with drivers from four states and one territory in the field.
The early laps of the A main saw a number of stoppages as the competitors raced clockwise around the country’s most unique venue.
Mount Gambier’s Jason Duell stayed in contention with the two leaders with Roycroft taking the lead on lap seven.
Duell’s race would be over on lap eight with fancied Queenslanders Robert Trapp & Nathan Barbeler also out early.
Jack Yates & Chris Marino soon found themselves battling for third place with as Darren Ciesiolka trailled behind in fifth.
Marino & Nelson ran wheel to wheel for second place as Roycroft continued to lead at the mid race distance.Soon after another one of the many stoppages Roycroft would slow on the back section of the Gympie Speedway with Marino, Nelson and Yates having to decide which way to go around the stricken black & green Ford Falcon.
Nelson now had the lead with Marino throwing everything at the new leader.
The race of third place Jack Yates would be over on lap twenty nine as the two leaders moved clear of the field.
As the laps wound down Marino threw everything at the defending champion trying to find a way past the Holden Commodore in front of him with two banging panels on the final lap.
Nelson would hold on to win his third straight Queensland State Title by 0.981 of a second from Chris Marino with Toowoomba’s Gary Bonwick driving a smart race to be third.
Speedway Sedans Queensland – QSCA Inc will now turn their attention to the 2022 SSA Production Sedan Queensland State Title to be held next Saturday Night at the Autobarn Carina International Speedway with over sixty nominations received.
