Tyson Moon has made it two wins in as many weeks by taking out round two of the Victorian Super Sedan Series and the opening round of the Avalon Track Championship at Avalon Raceway last night.
Moon continued his hot form from last weekend at Wahgunyah when he claimed the opening heat of the night. Moon led home Lionel West in second, and Dave Mackenzie in third.
Brock Atkins made it five heat wins in a row for Moons Racing when he took out heat two. Geelong’s own Jamie Collins was next across the line in second, ahead of Mick Nicola Jnr in third who was making his first Victorian start of the season.
Collins picked up his first heat win of the season in heat three, blasting by Nicola Jnr who finished second, ahead of Moon who rounded out the podium in third.
Dylan Barrow marked his first Avalon Raceway appearance with a heat win in the final heat of the night. Barrow led the way from Atkins in second, and West in third.
Collins qualified on pole position for the top six dash, and led from start to finish to secure pole position for the main event. Moon was next across the line in second, from Atkins, Barrow, Nicola Jnr, and West rounding out the six car field.
Collins and Moon ran side by side into turn one, before Moon powered around the outside to lead the opening lap of the thirty lap feature race.
Collins gave chase in second, from Barrow in third, Atkins in fourth, and Nicola Jnr in fifth.
A big incident on the main straight brought out the caution flag, and the end of the night for Danny Amato, and Ricky Ashmore.
Moon led away from restart from Collins, Barrow, Atkins, Nicola Jnr, West and Mackenzie in the chasing pack.
Moon was under pressure from Collins, whilst Moon’s teammate Atkins was applying the pressure to Barrow in a bid to step back on to the podium.
Barrow thwarted the challenge from Atkins, as Nicola Jnr and West bought into the battle for the final spot on the podium.
Out front Moon was able to fend off the pressure from Collins and put a couple of car lengths between himself and Collins in the battle for the lead.
The caution flag flew again on lap twelve for a spinning Mitchell Rigney, leaving eighteen laps to run at the resumption.
Moon led away at the restart, as Nicola Jnr slipped up in turns one and two allowing West through to fifth.
Moon and Collins put a gap between themselves and the battle for third between Barrow and Atkins, who also put a gap between themselves and the battle for fifth between West and Nicola Jnr.
A big moment for West in turns one and two on lap twenty cost him two positions, as Nicola Jnr and Mackenzie capitalised to move to fifth and sixth respectively.
Nicola Jnr now in clear air showed his true pace and began to reel in Atkins in the closing stages of the race.
Barrow and Atkins also were closing the gap to the lead pair as the laps were winding down.
Nicola Jnr was right on the tail of Atkins on the penultimate lap, and a small slip up from Atkins out of turn two gave Nicola Jnr the chance to go to fourth on the final lap.
Out front Moon maintained his two car length advantage and went on to record a well deserved victory.
Collins crossed the line second in front of his home town fans, from Barrow in third who claimed the first Super Sedan podium finish of his career.
Nicola Jnr claimed fourth on the final lap in a photo finish from Atkins who rounded out the top five in fifth.
Mackenzie was next across the line in sixth, ahead of West in seventh, Trav Ramsdale in eighth, Jimmy Harris in ninth, and Darren Giacometti in tenth.
The Victorian Super Sedan Series will be off this weekend before returning to Heartland Raceway in Moama on the 23rd of November.
