Press Release by WA Modified Sedans.
Luke Fraser has taken out yet another round of the 2020/2021 Blackman Fabrication WA Modified Sedan Series at Albany’s Attwell Park Speedway in a night full of fantastic racing action.
The opening heat of the night demonstrated how good Modified Sedan racing is in WA, as Calon Ball and Matt Kata raced side by side for the first half of the race. Jayke Malcolm also showed his promise, charging through the field to battle with our leaders, eventually passing Kata for second. Calon Ball would go on to win, defeating Jayke Malcolm and Matt Kata. Further back, Laurie Dowsett and Branden Fraser would charge from the back of the field to finish fourth and fifth.
Once again, the second heat of the night didn’t disappoint, with Luke Fraser and Ashley Baker duelling it out for the lead for the majority of the race. Anthony King tried his best to buy into this battle, though couldn’t quite match the duo in front who would hold on, with Luke Fraser defeating Ashley Baker and Anthony King.
Heat three would see a drama filled race, as Laurie Dowsett charged through the field once again, making of the passes of the night around the outside of Allan Mortimer to take the lead. Anthony King also looked quick, until he spun in front of the field, ending the race for himself, Jarrod Rick and Merv Penn. Laurie Dowsett would go on to defeat Allan Mortimer and Calon Ball, who again was quick on board his VS Holden Commodore.
Heat four would see an all Fraser front row, as Luke lead Branden to turn one. Jayke Malcolm soon started to put pressure on the state champion of Branden Fraser, as Albany’s Matt Kata tried everything to get passed Malcolm. With some contact, Kata made the pass, but would be relegated at the end of the race, leaving Luke Fraser to take the win ahead of Branden Fraser and Jayke Malcolm. Kata would finish fourth.
Sean Theyer would return for heat five and would start well to take the lead from Calon Ball and Paul Stevens. Ball would soon fall back to fifth place, as Matt Kata once again poked the nose in the battle for second and third. Sean Theyer would prove too strong to defeat Paul Stevens and Matt Kata, while Anthony King’s horror season would continue, as he again failed to finish.
The final heat race of the night would be a thriller, as Albany duo of Laurie Dowsett and Miranda Ball jostled for positions for the entire race. With four or five lead changes, Branden Fraser would watch on, as somehow Miranda Ball found some pace to pass Dowesett for the lead and eventual race win. Branden Fraser would finish second, as Laurie Dowsett finished third, ahead of Allan Mortimer and Sam McAuley.
For the second time this season, Luke Fraser would take out the Southern Stump and Mulching Services Shootout after qualifying on top of the points tally and then defeating Laurie Dowsett in the race for pole position and the extra cash bonus.
Luke Fraser and Laurie Dowsett would start on the front row of the twenty-lap feature race and it was Luke Fraser who would lead the field into the first turn. Laurie Dowsett and Calon Ball would follow in second and third, while Matt Kata yet again commenced his charge through the field.
Further back, Paul Stevens and Miranda Ball battled for the minor places, while Allan Mortimer tried to fight his way back through the field after losing a number of positions in the opening few laps of the race.
The yellow lights would soon come on, with Matt Kata and Branden Fraser spinning in turn 4. Both drivers would return to their positions, as Luke Fraser again lead the field away. Laurie Dowsett again latched onto Fraser’s back bumper, while Branden Fraser, Matt Kata and Jayke Malcolm followed behind.
As the laps continued to wind down, Miranda Ball soon retired from the event with some mechanical dramas, as Luke Fraser and Laurie Dowsett continued to follow one another for the lead. Jarrod Rick would then join Ball on the infield, after spinning on the front straight.
From this point on, Luke Fraser would not be headed, even after a last lap charge on the final corner. He would go on to win his second round of the 2020/2021 Blackman Fabrication WA Modified Sedan Series, defeating Laurie Dowsett and Calon Ball.
The WA Modified Drivers Association must thank the Albany Speedway Club for again hosting a round of the WA Modified Sedan Series, as well as Blackman Fabrication, Southern Stump and Mulching Services and Albany Truck Hire our sponsors of this round of the series.
