The Katherine Speedway located three hundred kilometres south of Darwin in the Northern Territory roared back into life with its first race meeting of the 2020 season this past Saturday Night.
Great numbers of spectators and competitors were on hand for the first Speedway meeting to be held in the Territory this year.Club President Rebecca Thomsen was thrilled with how the night unfolded after many months of planning. “We had a fantastic turnout for our season opener, the pits were full and the crowd were eager to see some Motorsport action” said Thomsen.
Fourteen SSA Street Stocks and Ten SSA Junior Sedans joined the other classes on the card with many competitors travelling from surrounding clubs Darwin and Tennant Creek.”With Darwin not having a season this year their Sedan competitors plan on travelling down to our race meetings along with some from Tennant Creek who haven’t had a chance to race at home of late due to having to replace their concrete wall” Thomsen continued.

The 2020 SSA Street Stock NT Title was scheduled to be held at Katherine Speedway back in June but due to the COVID-19 crisis the title has been deferred until 2021. “We have already had discussions with Speedway Sedans Northern Territory about hosting the SSA Street Stock NT Title in June 2021 which we hope to confirm in the short term” Thomsen concluded.
With the delay to their 2020 season, the Katherine Motorsports Club used the time to improve their facilities with ninety percent of the venue accessible for spectators which helps with social distancing requirements.
