National Champion Darren Kane has taken his Ian Boettcher Race Parts Dominator Chassis to victory lane in round one of the McCosker Super Sedan Series, and Ultimate Super Sedan Championship at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway.

In the opening heat of the night Justin Randall crossed the line first, but was relegated to third for a restart infringement by the stewards. Sam Hughes inherited a win after a photo finish with the returning Brodie Boss in second.

Kane decimated the field in heat two. Kane led the way from New South Welshman Tyson Moon in second, and Victorian Mick Nicola Jnr in third.

Rockhampton’s Harry Doyle led from the outset of heat three and would never be headed, crossing the line ahead of Mitchell Gee in second, and former National Champion Trent Wilson in third.

The returning Jye O’Brien held his nerve in heat four to claim a heat win on his first night in a Super Sedan for ten years! O’Brien held off Gee in second, and Toowoomba’s own Sean Black in third.

Heat five was the Brad Pascoe show, as the Tasmanian Champion dominated the action. Pascoe crossed the line more than four and a half seconds clear of Hayden Brims in second, who narrowly held off JJ Hamilton in third.

Victoria’s Mick Nicola Snr was the class of the field in the final heat of the night, leading home Wilson in second, and his son Mick Nicola Jnr in third.

By virtue of a pair of runner up finishes Gee qualified on pole position for the thirty lap main event, with O’Brien set to start on his outside.

Wilson would start from third, and was joined on the second row by Kane.

Gee got a great launch and led the opening stanza, from Kane who got a mega start from the outside of the second row. O’Brien ran third, from Wilson in fourth, and Nicola Jnr in fifth who started from the outside of the third row.

Kane’s Dominator Chassis was elite through the middle of the track and ranged up on the outside of Gee to take the lead at the stripe to start lap two.

Hughes was another to make a strong start in his Insane Chassis, and having started from eighth was already into third after two laps.

Kane was very strong in turns three and four, but Gee held the ascendancy in turns one and two, which kept the battle for the lead at a fever pitch as the lead pair headed towards lap traffic.

Nicola Snr entered the top five on lap ten, displacing O’Brien to outside the top five for the first time in the race.

O’Brien fought back and worked the middle of the track to re-take fifth position on lap twelve.

Kane had a great run through traffic, and was finally able to put a bit of breathing room between himself and the second running Gee.

O’Brien bought back into the battle for fourth as he reeled in Wilson and continued to make the middle lane work as he took fourth position right as the first caution flag flew with seven laps to run for a spinning Michael Hally.

Kane got a great launch from the restart as did O’Brien who capitalised on a messy start from Hughes to take third. Wilson also claimed fourth from Hughes, as Brad Pascoe also looked to enter the top five before another caution flag flew.

O’Brien rounded Gee up on the restart to take second with six laps to run. Pascoe drew level with Hughes on the outside, but Hughes was able to keep his nose in front at the stripe to hold fifth position as the final caution flag flew with two laps remaining.

Kane streaked away in the closing two lap dash to claim the first feature race of the season. A slip up from O’Brien allowed Gee to sneak through to claim second, from O’Brien who recorded a podium finish in his first night in a Super Sedan for ten years.

Wilson was next across the line in fourth, from Hughes in fifth who claimed the position in a photo finish from Brad Pascoe in sixth.

Nicola Snr was next across the line in seventh, ahead of Moon in eighth. Joel Berkley capped off a great Super Sedan debut with a ninth placed finish, from JJ Hamilton who charged from the B Main to round out the top ten.

Berkley’s strong debut saw him take home the Queensland Speedway Spares Racer Recognition Award for the opening round of the series.

Hamilton took out the Crumptons Interstate Hard Charger award after rallying from 22nd to finish tenth, and Steve Jordan was the Boomba Concrete Pumping Lucky Dog with a sixteenth placed finish.

There will be no rest for our drivers as we gear up for another double header this weekend at Mothar Mountain Speedway in Gympie with a pair of $5000 to win shows this Saturday and Sunday nights.
