Dustin Higgs has won the opening round of the 2023/24 Marri Park Tavern WA Super Sedan Series at the Tyrepower Manjimup Speedway.
Drivers tackled three heat races to set the field for the feature race, and it would be three time WA Champion Dusty Higgs who would kick his season off with a heat race win in the opening heat of the night.
Dustin would return serve in the second heat, taking a dominant win over Dusty in second, and Kemble Aylett in third.
Dusty took out his second heat win of the night in heat three, leading home Dustin in second, and young gun Bryce Fisher in third.
The Higgs boys locked out the front row, with Dusty starting from pole, with Dustin on his outside. Ryan Huxtable would start the race from third, with Lukas Lampert on his outside.
Dustin jumped to the lead from the outside, with Dusty in hot pursuit.
Huxtable would settle into third in the early exchanges before losing out to Aylett who started from fifth, and Fisher who started from sixth in consecutive laps.
Dustin maintained a couple of car length lead over his father throughout the first half of the race before they headed towards lap traffic.
Dustin was able to slip away in traffic, but as the laps wound down Dusty would reel Dustin back in and continue to pressure him right to the chequered flag.
Dustin would hold on for a narrow win over Dusty in second. Aylett came out on top in a race long battle with Fisher to round out the podium.
Fisher crossed the line in fourth, ahead of Huxtable in fifth, and Lampert in sixth. The debuting Luke Matlejan rounded out the field in seventh.
When asked how he felt after taking the opening round of the season Dustin had this to say;
“Yeah it was a good result, didn’t seem likely as Dad was pretty damn quick so it was a matter of who was getting into turn one first.”
The Marri Park Tavern WA Super Sedan Series will return in a fortnight with the second round at Mount Barker.
