The Speedway Sedans Australia, National Modified Sedan Title at the Ian Boettcher Race Parts, Kingaroy Speedway is just a week away, with a massive entry list of 99 drivers from all over Australia.
Wayne Gilroy from Mackay in northern Queesland is one of those drivers and will be competing in his third National Title.
The forty two year old, second generation racer, will be driving a VY Commodore in the title.
I love the Kingaroy track because it is three lanes most times. The club is the best in Australia. It is always fast racing, however the track can change quickly. We are always mindful of that. I have quick timed there for the Kings Royal, when that format was run. I think Kingaroy suits my driving style, Gilroy said.
Gilroy who has been racing for 27 years has qualified fourth and tenth in two of the Kings Royals he has participated in but failed to finish either of them, but admits to learning plenty as a result.
I look forward to competing against the best in the country and love the competition. I have learnt most National Titles are very hard just to Qualify in the top 20. This year would be the hardest for our team but we are keen to get a result, he said.
This season the car has been quick with podiums at clubs shows. We have been able to move forward and pass cars in all heats. Recently we made the trek 900 km south to Gympie to get some data on setups for the up-coming Queensland title. We matched laps times with Baxter and Pagel which are local track legends and it is a fun track too, Gilroy added.
However most the big shows like Kings Royal and Tbar Nationals we have attended I had dnfs with flat tyres. I keep saying to the old man (Greg Gilroy) owner of Bowen Engine Centre, we could win some races if we had air in our tyres, Gilroy joked.
I am looking forward to racing all the fast guys in the field, mainly the Victorians, they are professional. Plenty of talent turning up for this Australian title from all over. So I am looking forward to wheeling the #19 as hard as I can to get to the front, Gilroy continued.
The goal for the title is to qualify in the top sixteen first, and then reassess from there. Car set up for the track conditions in the feature will be vital. I aim to finish in the top five if I can qualify for the A main. We are not going to just make up numbers, if some desperate moves or risks need to be taken, I will take them. I am pretty passionate about getting a result for my team and sponsors. I owe them, he concluded.
