For the third successive season, Luke Fraser has claimed the opening round of the WA Modified Sedan Series by winning Round 1 of the 2021/2022 KCM Transport WA Modified Sedan Series at Moora Speedway.
The event that was proudly supported by Paul Rumbold of Moora Nissan attracted a healthy field of competitors as the West Australian Modified Drivers Association got stuck back into the racing action.
The opening set of heats would see Luke Fraser and ex-Moora local Anthony King cross the line first, before West Australian Champion, Jayke Malcolm and Modified Sedan newcomer Lee Watt would win heats three and four.
Anthony King would be the only driver to claim multiple heat race victories by taking out the fifth heat of the night, before Albany’s Calon Ball would add his name to the heat race winners list, taking out the final heat of the night.
The next event on the schedule would be the Southern Stump and Mulching Services Top 6 Shootout, that would see six drivers battle it out for the all-important pole position of the twenty lap final to come, plus collect a nice $250 cash bonus.
Pinjarra’s Shane Dubberlin would defeat Jayke Malcolm in the first run of the shootout, before Brendan Selleck would prove too strong to hold off Dubberlin.
Anthony King, who had won two heats already was ready for the fight of Brendan Selleck, who tried everything to squeeze his Holden Commodore past the Ford Falcon of King. King would manage to hold on, as he took on Calon Ball for a place on the front row of the grid.
Ball would wash wide, handing Anthony King the win as he continued to progress through the shootout.
Luke Fraser would be the final opponent for Anthony King, with King getting the upper hand off the start before Fraser would fight back on the final lap.
It went right down to the line, though it was Anthony King who would manage to hold on to secure pole position for the upcoming final.
With the field set for the twenty lap final, King and Fraser would face off on the front row as they race side by side into turn one.
Anthony King would soon hit the front as the battle for third was on between Calon Ball and Jayke Malcolm, who quickly worked his way through the field.
Further back Shane Dubberlin led the charge for the minor places, before a yellow would bring the field back together as Jayke Malcolm found himself out of the race.
With the race back underway, Brendan Selleck wasted no time in working the outside line as Jason Batchelor found himself in trouble, bringing on another yellow light.
The race soon continued with Batchelor left to watch from the infield, as Anthony King led Luke Fraser, Calon Ball, Brendan Selleck and Lee Watt.
Coby Stevens rounded out the top six ahead of Merv Penn and rookie Gaje Price on board the second of the Totally Independent Tyre Service Ford Falcons.
Anthony King found himself out to a handsome lead around the halfway point of the race and looked like he would be hard to beat from this point.
With one lap to run, King’s Ford Falcon started to slow coming off turn two as he backfired his way around the final turn.
Luke Fraser would as a result steal the round win from a gallant Anthony King, with Calon Ball coming home narrowly in third ahead of Lee Watt and Brendan Selleck.
The West Australian Modified Drivers Association would like to thank Paul Rumbold of Moora Nissan for his support of the opening of the 2021/2022 KCM Transport WA Modified Sedan Series, where the attention will now turn to round two of the series to be held at Narrogin Speedway on Saturday November 13th courtesy of Stevens Ceilings.
