The numbers are in, and Derby Speedway Club is set to host its biggest ever Donny Archer Memorial this Friday and Saturday night, with an outstanding 85 competitors across five divisions converging on the Kimberley for what is sure to be one of Western Australia’s premier speedway weekends.
Headlining the spectacular program is the Westralia Cup, with a massive 47 Street Stocks nominated to battle not only for feature race honours, but for the right to decide which Western Australian speedway club will host the next running of the prestigious event.
Current Westralia Cup holder Jake Hoath will have the honour of defending the trophy after his victory in last season’s Brian Rose Memorial at Ellenbrook Speedway earned Derby Speedway the hosting rights for this year’s event. Hoath enters the weekend in strong form and will be looking to keep the Cup on home soil against one of the strongest Street Stock fields assembled in Western Australia this season.
Adding to the Hoath family’s huge weekend, newly crowned Northern Territory Street Stock Champion Lincoln Hoath will also be in action, competing in the Top Star Junior Sedan ranks as he looks to continue his outstanding season.
Fourteen Western Australian speedway clubs have drivers entered in the Street Stock field, with each club hoping their representatives can bring home the Westralia Cup and the opportunity to host next year’s event.
Adding even more intrigue are three interstate invaders who are yet to declare which Western Australian club they will represent.
Northern Territory competitors Jake Koivumaki, Kane Lloyd and Lucas Fry are all making the journey west for Derby’s biggest event and, before racing begins on Friday night, must nominate which WA club they will represent if they are to win the Westralia Cup.
The home club will certainly be well represented, with Derby Speedway Club fielding a formidable lineup including defending Cup winner Jake Hoath, Brinley McGaffin, Matt Lowe, Robert Dunbar and the Doust family.
Nickol Bay Speedway Club boasts another strong contingent featuring names such as Stevie O’Dowd and Tyde Lovell, while Albany Speedway Club will be represented by Peter Herbert, Paul Bowman and Tyron Hall.
Hillview Speedway Club fields Daniel Flavel, Craig Clayton and Lenny Bates, Collie Racing Drivers Association has Paul Briggs, Cody Avins and Paul Joss, while the Racing Drivers Association of WA (Ellenbrook) will be represented by Hayden Norman, Reece O’Reilly, Ash Con-Goo and Ben Norman.
Strong challengers also come from Carnarvon, Esperance, Kununurra, Broome, Mount Barker, Manjimup, Port Hedland and Pithara, making for an incredibly diverse field from every corner of the state.
While the Street Stocks take centre stage, the supporting program is equally impressive.
The Top Star Junior Sedans have attracted a quality 15-car field led by Lincoln Hoath, with Derby’s Brinley McGaffin, Koby Rickerby, Travis McGaffin, Blake Doust, Brax Hardy, Blake McGaffin and Jesse-James Fuller joined by challengers from Broome, Nickol Bay, Port Hedland and Hillview.
Six New Star Junior Sedans will also contest the weekend, while twelve Production Sedans and five Modified Sedans round out what promises to be a sensational two nights of racing.
Racing gets underway from 5:00pm on both Friday and Saturday, with fans expected to pack Derby Speedway Club for what shapes as the biggest Donny Archer Memorial in the event’s history.
For those unable to make the trip to the Kimberley, every lap of the action will be streamed live on Clay-Per-View.
With club pride, interstate rivalry, the Westralia Cup and the biggest Donny Archer Memorial ever assembled all on the line, Derby is set for an unforgettable weekend of speedway.
