Karratha’s Nickol Bay Speedway has become a hotbed for Street Stock racing in Western Australia.
This weekend’s Karratha Machinery Hire Brett Johnson Memorial will again showcase the division in the North West this Friday and Saturday Night.
Despite the cost of fuel increases, a field of 36 drivers are making their way to the Pilbara track, which sits over 1,500 kilometres away from the State Capital of Perth.
Carnarvon’s Jace Kempton will have a target on his back this weekend as he goes into the eighth running of the BJM with the champion’s crown, winning the event last year in a covid ravaged event that saw the south of the state isolated.
As the reigning champion, Kempton will also get the added honour of running under number 8, the number Brett loved.
This year, the world is back open, meaning the south is ready to rise again, and they have brought out some of their best.
The Oldfield brothers, Jamie and Warren, headline a great field of drivers coming from below the 26th parallel.
As both are looking to make their first start in this event. But this year, the north may put up their strongest argument yet.
Along with Kempton, there is plenty of talent now residing from the north, and none more prominent than Jake Hoath, who has been mighty impressive as of late wherever he goes.
Thirteen Karratha locals are also in the field, headed by their Club President Stevie O’Dowd, who would love to keep the trophy home after finishing second to Kempton last year.
The field also includes drivers who have won six of the past seven BJMs.
As local Matt Herbert (2014, 2015), Collie’s Paul Joss (2017, 2018), and former Western Australian Champion Hayden Norman (2016) join Kempton on the list.Junior Sedans are also on the program for both nights.
Racing is scheduled to get underway from 6:30 pm.
