Branden Fraser has tonight claimed Round 3 of 2019/2020 Civil Hirings WA Modified Sedan Series at Make Smoking History Collie Speedway, going one step better than this time a week ago in Kalgoorlie.
Branden and brother Luke went through the opening two rounds of heats undefeated, proving far too strong for their fellow racers. It wasn’t until heats five and six where we would see a different heat winner, as Rick Musarra and Anthony King would win the final two heats of the night.
Mechanical dramas would see Merv Penn unable to get onto the track at all, as Adam Houston and Jarrod Rick would retire from the night during the heat racing.
Come the Southern Stump and Mulching Services Shootout, Anthony King would face young gun Ashley Baker in the first instalment. Baker would get the upper hand and went on to face Narrogin’s Paul Stevens, who was too strong. Stevens would then be defeated by Rick Musarra, whose run came to an end at the hands of Branden Fraser. Fraser would battle it out with brother Luke in the final two lap battle, with Branden coming out on top.
With an all Fraser front row, Luke Fraser would make the best of the start from the outside and would lead the opening laps of the twenty lap feature race. It wasn’t long until Branden would make his charge to the front of the field, passing Luke and opening up a small buffer.
Further behind, lady racer Coby Stevens was also making her mark on the field, passing Luke Fraser for second and a couple of laps later, passing Branden Fraser to take the lead of the race with 15 laps remaining.
Branden Fraser wasn’t done here and closed in on Stevens, making the pass for the lead soon after, as Stevens fell back into the hands of Luke Fraser and Anthony King, in a battle that would continue for a number of laps.
Paul Stevens and Kevin Ellement would also close in on the battle for second, as the field started to make its way passed lapped traffic of veteran racer Kim Williams. It wasn’t long before there would be a stoppage as Luke Fraser came to a stop with electrical issues ending his race.
With five laps remaining, the race continued and was as fierce as ever, with the brother and sister duo of Paul and Coby Stevens battling it out for the final step on the podium. Ashley Baker and Calon Ball were also starting to work their way into this battle, while Jayke Malcolm, Rick Musarra and Shane Dubberlin jostled further behind.
Another restart would be ordered with just two laps remaining and from this point Branden Fraser would not be headed, crossing the line to defeat a gallant Anthony King, Coby Stevens and a fast finishing Kevin Ellement. Paul Stevens would end up finishing fifth ahead of Calon Ball, Rick Musarra, Ashley Baker, Shane Dubberlin, Jayke Malcolm and Kim Williams.
