Joel Berkley has stormed to the first Super Sedan victory of his career in round five of the McCosker Super Sedan Series brought to you by Kempy Race Pipes at McCosker Gladstone Speedway in just his second Super Sedan start.
National Champion Darren Kane kicked off his evening with a comfortable win in the opening heat of the night. Kane led home JJ Hamilton in second, and Zac Brims in third.
Rob Hamilton marked his first start aboard his brand new Dominator Chassis with a victory in heat two. Hamilton got the best of Victorian Mick Nicola in second, and Zac Pascoe in third.
Jye O’Brien continued his strong start to the season with a win in heat three. Sam Hughes crossed the line in second, following a photo finish with Berkley in third.
Nicola kept up his momentum from his first heat race with a victory in heat four. Rockhampton’s Harry Doyle was next across the line in second, ahead of ‘The Joker’ Steve Jordan in third.
Tasmanian Champion Brad Pascoe took out a comfortable win in heat five, crossing the line two seconds clear of Kane in second, and Gladstone’s own Bob McCosker in third.
Berkley secured the first heat win of his Super Sedan career in heat six, leading the way from Michael Hally in second, and JJ Hamilton in third.
Zac Pascoe came out on top in the battle of the brothers in heat eight. Zac led home his brother Brad Pascoe in second, and JJ Hamilton in third.
Matty Pascoe dominated heat eight after a challenging first two heat races. Nicola continued his strong form with a runner up finish, ahead of Kane in third.
Berkley went back to back, claiming the ninth and final heat of the night. Sean Black was next across the line in second, from Hally in third.
Berkley qualified on pole position for the thirty five lap main event, with Nicola set to start on the outside of the front row.
Kane qualified in position three with Hamilton set to launch from fourth on the grid. Zac Pascoe started from the inside of row three, with Hally on his outside.
Berkley and Nicola went through turns one and two side by side and powered down the back straight looking to gain the ascendancy.
The ascendancy came for Berkley into turn three as he went deep on the brakes to take the lead and lead at the line after the opening lap.
Nicola was next across the line in second, Kane in third, JJ Hamilton in fourth, and Zac Pascoe in fifth at the end of the opening lap.
Zac Pascoe moved into fourth on lap two, as Kane applied the pressure to Nicola for the runner up spot.
Brad Pascoe entered the top five on lap three, having started from seventh.
Berkley was settling a frenetic pace out front as he pulled a straight away advantage after the opening five laps.
Brad Pascoe took fourth from his brother on lap ten, as Matty Pascoe entered the top five on lap eleven after starting from eighth.
Kane moved into the runner up position on lap eleven finally displacing of Nicola. Brad and Matty Pascoe both displaced Nicola as well right before the opening caution of the race was out for a spinning Tobie Powe on lap fourteen.
Berkley resumed at the front of the pack from Kane in second, Matty Pascoe moved to third from Brad Pascoe in fourth, and Nicola in fifth.
Hamilton blasted around the outside of Nicola reclaim fifth position on lap eighteen.
Berkley set about rebuilding his lead and he did just that, showing plenty of grit to dispose of lap traffic.
Kane and Pascoe battled through lap traffic seeing Pascoe claim second position with eleven laps remaining to chase down Berkley.
Pascoe began to close the gap to Berkley, as the battle for the final spot on the podium also ramped up, with Brad Pascoe and JJ Hamilton all over the back of Kane in third.
The yellow flag flew with seven laps remaining after Zac Brims went for a spin in turn three.
After some contact during the caution flag both Matty Pascoe and Kane were black flagged by the stewards exiting the race from second and third respectively.
This would elevate Brad Pascoe to second, and JJ Hamilton to third for the restart.
Hamilton got a great launch, but biked the car through turns one and two, allowing Pascoe back through to second. Hally also capitalised to claim third position through turns three and four.
Hamilton fought back to reclaim third with five to run, right before the caution flag was out with four laps remaining.
Berkley put the nerves aside to go on to record a popular victory in front of the Gladstone fans. Hamilton claimed the runner up spot after a ding dong battle with Brad Pascoe who claimed the final spot on the podium.
Harry Doyle was next across the line in fourth from Hally in fifth who rounded out the top five.
Nicola cross the line sixth, from O’Brien in seventh, Black in eighth, Hughes in ninth, and David Musch who rounded out the top ten.
Bob McCosker claimed the QSS Racer Recognition Award, Harry Doyle was the Boomba Concrete Pumping Lucky Dog, and David Musch took home the Crumptons Interstate Hard Charger Award after racing from twentieth to tenth.
The McCosker Super Sedan Series will return to Autobarn Carina Speedway this Saturday night for round six of the 2024/25 series.
