Barry Rose has again shown why he is one of Western Australia’s best as he claimed the Kevan Joyce Memorial for SSA Production Sedans at the Pithara Speedway yesterday, doubling as Round Two of the 2020 Natrad SSD Four Crowns Series.
Rose had a solid start to the day with a heat win and a third place to start on the front row alongside pole sitter John Castagna who had the same results but recorded a faster lap time.
As the race went green, Rose would use the highline to go around Castagna at the start, while second row starter Ashley Baker would stick his nose under Castagna to take second across the stripe the first time of asking.
Hayden Norman became the first retiree of the race as his car began to emit clouds of smoke while running in fifth place, while the yellows would come on at the same time for David Francis who spun in turn four.
On the restart Hamish Macalpine hit the cone, while up front Rose and Baker raced away as Macalpine made his way past Castagna for third.
Again the yellows would come on, this time for Nicholas Porter, while Murray Cleasby also had a moment on the back straight.
Hamish Macalpine was relegated to the rear for his earlier indiscretion, but back up front Rose again raced away from Baker, with Castagna being hunted in third place by Jayke Malcolm and Josh Macalpine.
Dale Cockman was running sixth before going high and slowing down and ultimately retiring, while the yellows came on shortly after for Brad Mitchell who found himself spinning to a stop with ten of the twenty five laps complete.
The restart would see Malcolm slot into third behind Rose and Baker, as Castagna was still fighting off Josh Macalpine and a hard charging duo in Drew Ogle and Hamish Macalpine, both having come from the rear.
Ogle moved into fifth and Hamish Macalpine into sixth, then as Ogle was with Macalpine challenging Castagna for fourth, contact was made seeing Ogle spinning wildly across turn four and Hamish Macalpine disqualified from the race.
Rose was in a class of his own as the race restarted, while behind him a whole series of changes took place, Ogle accounted for Castagna, then shortly after Malcolm passed Baker, then a lap later Ogle passed Baker for third and in the dying stages got by Malcolm.
In the end though, it was Rose with a strong win over Ogle, Malcolm and Baker, with Castagna rounding out the top five.
Also on the same program it was Carl Pickersgill who recorded a brilliant win in the SSA Street Stocks class while Beau Oldfield defeated National Champion Mitchell Baker in the SSA Junior Sedans.
With two of the four Natrad SSD Four Crown Production Sedan Series rounds now completed, it is Ashley Baker who leads the overall point score after two top four finishes.
Barry Rose has clawed back to second place after a disappointing finish in the opening round while Jayke Malcolm is in third place.
The third round of the series will be held at the Kellerberrin Speedway on the 15th of August in conjunction with the PTQCC Production Sedan Open Championships.
