Victorian Dylan Barrow is the points leader after night one of competition for the ENZED 2026 SSA Modified Sedan National Title at Hi-Tec Oils Toowoomba Speedway.
Barrow was solid through his heats, becoming the first to claim dual wins, and with a second-place finish in his other heat, has scored 100 points.
Next best is Kye Walters, who with two wins and a third is on 95 points and equal with the first Queenslander in Shane Macdonald, the duo only split by fastest lap times.
Joel Berkley, Max Clarke and Josh Harm are tied for fourth overall, having each gained a win, a second and a third in what was a great opening night of racing.
The opening heat would only last one lap before the yellows came out for a stranded Chris Blackburn, and the restart gave Kent Menzies and Shane Macdonald the chance to get by early leader Richard Cook. Unfortunately Cook would experience issues a lap later and attempt to retire infield, but was collected by a group of cars to bring out the cautions once again. Macdonald raced into the lead upon the resumption with Josh Harm chasing hard ahead of Bryce Bayfield and despite another stoppage through the middle of the race, the top two would remain unchanged while Menzies got back by Bayfield for third.
It took Australian Champion Nathan Macdonald just two laps to move into the lead in heat two and from here he simply raced away, claiming the win by over eight seconds from Aaron Alcock and Kye Walters.
Joel Berkley was straight into the lead in heat three and like in the race before would race away with the win, defeating Mark Raymont by nearly four seconds while JJ Hamilton raced through from eighth to finish third.
The fourth heat saw Wade McCarthy and Andrew Dike the unfortunate victims of contact between a number of cars on the opening lap, leaving both on the infield. The complete restart saw Tim Atkin race into the lead ahead of Darran Lester and Jarrod Peacock while Aidan Raymont made his way into fourth from the rear. The yellows came on for a spun Luke Reyment with four laps to go and while the order didn’t change at the front, Raymont and Peacock would go at it lap after lap, Raymont getting the nod as the chequers flew.
It was on for young and old in heat five as a number of drivers fought their way through from the back. With four complete it was Jarod Waters who had taken the lead from Max Clarke and Brodie Boss, with the yellows coming out shortly after. Only one more lap would be completed as another caution came out, but it mattered little to Waters, racing away to take the win from Dylan Barrow who charged forward in the final laps to cross the line ahead of Clarke.
Angelo Halacas made the most of his front row start to lead the opening laps of the sixth heat, but a number of stoppages, including one for Quinton Clarke who lost a wheel, kept him in touch with the field. Jaiden Healey finally took advantage of a restart to race into the lead and went on to win over Halacas and Jason Dreaver.
Cars went three and four wide for the opening few laps of the final heat of round one, with Charlotte Christensen emerging out in front of Mason Cameron and Darcy Wilson. Cameron and Wilson both got by on lap six, while on the final lap Brad Wicks also got by but was relegated at the end, Cameron winning from Wilson and Christensen.
The second round kicked off with Chris Pagel doing his best to make up for an earlier DNF, holding strong at the front after multiple restarts. Aidan Raymont however had other ideas and chased him hard, but in the end Pagel held on for the win ahead of Raymont and Nathan Lowe.
JJ Hamilton was the early leader in heat nine, but Dylan Barrow chased him down and took the lead at the halfway point. By this time the lead duo were well clear of the rest of the field, where Nathan Macdonald would eventually emerge in third place after starting from the back.
Heat ten saw Glenn Pagel out in front of some heavy hitters including Mark Raymont, Jarod Waters and Joel Berkley. Waters and Raymont made contact that saw Raymont spinning and Waters sent to the rear, putting Berkley into second behind Pagel for the restart. Pagel however held strong, defeating Berkley and Raymont.
It was carnage at the start of heat eleven as Dean Hawkins rode a wheel and went towards the wall while Will Shore lost a wheel, to set up a complete restart. The second attempt was no better, Luke Reyment spinning in front of the field and three cars piling in. It was however third time lucky, with Bailey Barnicoat moving into the lead and able to survive multiple restarts and more carnage behind him to take the win. Jarrod Peacock came home second after an epic battle with Josh Harm and Brett Barron.
Heat twelve saw a cracking start, cars fighting for position right throughout the field. Max Clarke would emerge out in front of Brad Wicks and Braydon Steffens, with a restart seeing Steffens fade through the field and allowing Ty Galley to fight past Richard Cook for the third place finish.
Brody Chrystie emerged victorious in heat thirteen after a couple of restarts, defeating Mason Cameron and Shane Macdonald.
The final heat of round two looked to go green to chequer with Kye Walters racing into the lead, but with two to go the yellows came out for a spun car, with second placed Jack Cameron heading infield under yellows with a flat tyre. Walters led away, with Bayfield making slight contact, the duo slightly slowing and seeing the rest of the field pile in. Luckily most were able to restart, with Walters taking the win from Matt Nelson and Brad Stein.
The final round of heats for night one kicked off with Aidan Raymont immediately moving to the front from row two. He pulled away quickly as Drew Harrison and Allan Mortimer held down second and third respectively, Raymont winning by nearly three and a half seconds.
Heat sixteen was an all the way win to Dylan Barrow, who became the first dual winner of the weekend, defeating Jarrod Waters and Nathan Macdonald.
Brad Wicks would race his way to the front in heat seventeen, defeating Darran Lester and Joel Berkley.
Although Brendon Bayfield got the jump in heat eighteen, it didn’t take Kye Walters long to fight back, racing past him for the lead. Max Clarke followed quickly behind, and the duo pulled away from the rest of the battling field. Despite setting the fastest lap of the race on the final circulation, Clarke was unable to get past Walters who took the win while Glenn Pagel was the best of the rest.
Shane Macdonald was determined to make full use of his front row start in heat nineteen and he did just that, surviving a number of restarts and racing away from the field each time to defeat Robert White and Bryce Bayfield.
The penultimate heat of night one saw Shannon Blackburn elevated to the front row after the demise of Chris Medcalf, and he took advantage to grab the lead. The race only lasted one lap before a number of cars came together, and Glenn Pagel did all he could on the restart to get past Blackburn, eventually doing it on lap three. Darcy Wilson also got by Blackburn and applied the blowtorch to Pagel, capitalising on a Pagel mistake that saw him go wide in turn four to take the win from Pagel with Jack Cameron third.
Night one came to a close with Brett Barron leading away the final heat. Behind him was a four car battle for second, Josh Harm running the highline to grab second on lap six. Harm continued his run on the outside and closed on Barron, taking the lead on the back straight to complete lap eight. Shortly after there was a stoppage, setting up a green, white, chequer run to close out night one, but Harm was too strong, defeating Barron and Tim Atkin.
Teams will now work overnight to prepare for the final round of heats tomorrow, prior to the all-important C, B and A Mains.
Full coverage will again be available on Clay-Per-View.
