Collie’s Cody Avins has stunned the field to win his first Brian Rose Memorial on the final corner at the Allwest Plant Hire Ellenbrook Speedway yesterday afternoon.
The event, which doubled as the opening round of the first round of the ODH Mechanical Tri-City Series saw forty-three drivers start the weekend, though it was Matthew Iwanow and twelve-time Brian Rose Memorial champion Jamie Oldfield who would start on the front row for the thirty-lap final.
From the outset, Jamie Oldfield would take the lead followed with Matthew Iwanow following in second. The battle for the minor places behind the leading duo would be the race to watch, with multiple drivers fighting to move through the field, including Jake Hoath, Evan Wakefield and Peter Dowie.
Starting from position thirteen, Cody Avins quickly made his way through the field in his trusty EL Ford Falcon moving into the top five within the first dozen laps. Blake Iwanow was another driver who was blazing through the field after starting well deep in the field following contact with the concrete wall in his first heat of the weekend.
With five laps to go, the yellow lights would come on Evan Wakefield, Damon Lyall and Hayden Norman had a coming together coming off turn four. This would bunch the field up, as the green flag flew again with Matthew Iwanow wasting no time trying to make a pass on Oldfield, with Avins watching on.
Avins would make a pass for second with two laps to run, before he would set his sights on Jamie Oldfield, sneaking up the inside through turn one and two of the final lap. As the pair approached the final corner, Oldfield opted for the higher line, as Avins stuck to the bottom, a move that would see him claim the biggest victory of his Street Stock career to claim his first Brian Rose Memorial and the opening round of the ODH Mechanical Tri-City Series.
