It has been a night full of surprises in the opening night of the North West Championships with an epic larger then life crowd at the Carnarvon Speedway treated to a night full of surprises.
With Carnarvon on show on the big stage, Wade Mason shone the brightest of them all as he goes into night two equal top points after three of the five qualifying rounds with former Western Australian Title HolderHayden Norman.
Mason had the crowd talking in the opening heat race of the Street Stock Stocksville, being able to outshine and pass current WA Champ Jamie Oldfield for the victory. After a runner up finish in his second heat and a second heat race win in heat five after starting on pole and leading the entire distance sealing the equal points lead after night one.
Normans’ night felt just the same as Masons, with his heat race win coming from downing the State Title holder in an epic heat four then Carnarvon youngsters Damon Lyall and Jace Kempton in the final primary that brought the local crowd to their feet.
All drivers have two more heat races to come on night two with a 30-lap feature race ending the night with drivers doing 15 laps in one direction, then 15 laps in the other direction.
The Modified Perpetual is anyone’s to grab, with the three heat races going to three different drivers. But it is the VK Holden Commodore of Sam McAuley leading the charge going into the second night.
McAuley, local Jarrod Rick and State Champion Jayke Malcolm where the victors for the opening night heat races but it was the consistency of the North West driver that has stood strong.
Racing on the second night is scheduled to start at 5pm.
